PELL-Cover®: A Smarter Way to Top Dress Your Lawn

Pelletized biochar, compost, and humic acid that rebuild lawn soil from the ground up — applied with a standard spreader in minutes.

Compacted clay that repels water. Sandy soil that drains nutrients before roots can use them. Most struggling lawns trace back to one root cause: poor soil structure. PELL-Cover® Lawn Top Dressing Pellets fix that problem without the cost, mess, or backbreaking labor of traditional bulk top dressing.

What Is PELL-Cover®?

PELL-Cover® is a pelletized lawn top dressing that combines three soil amendments — biochar, STA-certified compost, and humic acid — into a dense, spreader-ready pellet. Each pellet drops cleanly through the grass canopy, settles into the thatch layer, and breaks down to feed the soil biome below.

The result is a lawn that holds water better, releases nutrients steadily, and grows deeper roots. You stop fighting your soil and start improving it. See full product specs and request a quote on the PELL-Cover® Lawn Top Dressing page →

The Three Ingredients That Do the Work

Every pellet contains three scientifically backed soil amendments. Each one targets a different deficiency, and together they rebuild the soil structure that healthy turf depends on.

🌿

Red Pine Biochar

Sourced from Michigan red pine through oxygen-free pyrolysis. The porous carbon structure captures and holds water, nutrients, and beneficial microbes — the same soil amendment ancient Mayan farmers used to create the legendary Terra Preta soils still productive today.

🍂

STA-Certified Compost

Clean, pathogen-free compost that meets the U.S. Composting Council's rigorous Seal of Testing Assurance standards. Adds organic matter and beneficial biology that colonizes the biochar's microscopic pores.

Humic Acid

Improves nutrient uptake, strengthens root systems, and stimulates beneficial microbial activity. Plants get more from every nutrient already in the ground.

How PELL-Cover® Compares to Bulk Top Dressing

Top dressing with bulk compost works, but the process is brutal. Here's how the two approaches stack up:

Traditional Bulk Top Dressing

  • Dump trucks deliver tons of loose material
  • Hours of hand-shoveling and raking
  • Compost quality varies (weed seeds, pathogens)
  • Risk of smothering existing turf
  • Heavy labor, high cost, multi-day project

PELL-Cover® Pellets

  • Loads into a standard broadcast spreader
  • Application takes minutes, not days
  • STA-certified, consistent ingredients in every bag
  • Drops cleanly through the canopy into the thatch
  • One person, one spreader, one afternoon

What PELL-Cover® Does for Your Lawn

💧

Holds More Water

Sandy soil retains moisture instead of letting it drain past the roots.

🌱

Reduces Compaction

Clay soil becomes porous, letting water and oxygen reach the root zone.

🔬

Builds Soil Biology

Mycorrhizal fungi colonize the pellets and form symbiotic networks with grass roots, expanding the effective root zone.

🌍

Cuts Fertilizer Runoff

Biochar locks nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil instead of letting them wash into lakes and streams.

💰

Reduces Fertilizer Need

Better nutrient retention means fewer applications to maintain dense, vibrant turf.

🌾

Deeper, Stronger Roots

Humic acid boosts root development and natural disease resistance.

How to Apply PELL-Cover®

Aerate first if your soil is compacted, then load the pellets into a standard broadcast spreader and walk your lawn the same way you would for fertilizer or seed. Start with a heavier initial application to establish soil structure, then follow up with lighter annual treatments until your soil reaches optimal fertility. Spring and fall are ideal — apply when grass is actively growing and can recover quickly from aeration.

PELL-Cover® FAQs

What is lawn top dressing and why does it matter?

Lawn top dressing is the practice of applying a thin layer of soil amendments over an existing lawn to improve the soil underneath. Healthy soil grows healthy grass, so top dressing addresses the root cause of thin, struggling turf instead of masking it with fertilizer.

How is PELL-Cover® different from regular fertilizer?

Fertilizer feeds the grass directly, often with synthetic nitrogen that washes away. PELL-Cover® feeds the soil itself by adding biochar, STA-certified compost, and humic acid. Better soil grows better grass with less fertilizer.

Can I apply PELL-Cover® with a regular lawn spreader?

Yes. The pellets are sized to flow through any standard broadcast or drop spreader, so no specialty equipment is required.

How much does one bag cover?

Each 1 cubic foot bag covers approximately 500 square feet at the standard application rate.

When is the best time to apply PELL-Cover®?

PELL-Cover® can be applied during active growing seasons in spring or fall. Pair it with core aeration and overseeding in early fall for the strongest results in Michigan lawns.

Is PELL-Cover® safe for pets and kids?

Yes. PELL-Cover® contains no synthetic pesticides or harsh chemicals — just biochar, STA-certified compost, and humic acid.
